• Dossier Abri d’Érasme, Espaces réflexifs, situés, diffractés et enchevêtrés, 2022

À l’Abri prend racine au coeur d’une enquête entamée en 2019 sur l'Abri d'Érasme, une commune « thérapeutique » fondée dans les années 1970 dans les Laurentides québécoises par l’infirmière Chanterelle (Lucille Angers) et le psychiatre Roger Lemieux, accompagné·es de la psychologue Sylvie Chassin. À partir d'archives, d'entrevues et de recherches de terrain réalisées en collaboration avec l'historien de la santé et philosophe Alexandre Klein, ce projet vise à explorer les liens entre l'architecture et la psychiatrie, la communauté et la mémoire des lieux, à travers le prisme de l'abri. En donnant à entendre une diversité de voix sur ce lieu et la communauté qui l’habitait jadis, dont certaines sont demeurées inouies, le documentaire se déploie comme une contre-histoire de cette expérience anti-psychiatrique controversée.

Qu’est-ce qui constitue un abri et qu’est-ce qui, à l’inverse, peut le défaire ? Comment trouver refuge - physiquement et psychiquement - dans nos relations aux autres, et qu’est-ce qui pose obstacle à des espaces relationnels où la santé et l’intégrité de chacun·e sont soignées ? Comment l’environnement bâti influt-il sur le bien-être des individus et sur leur capacité d’autonomisation ? Ces interrogations servent de trames de fond afin d’écouter les récits et les silences de l’Abri et des gens qui y ont cherché refuge.

Sheltered is rooted in an investigation initiated in 2019 around the Abri d’Érasme (Erasmus shelter), an autonomous “therapeutic” community founded in the 1970s in the québécois Laurentians by nurse Chanterelle (Lucille Angers) and psychiatrist Roger Lemieux, accompanied by psychologist Sylvie Chassin. Based on archives, interviews and field trips conducted in collaboration with health historian and philosopher Alexandre Klein, this project aims to explore the links between architecture and psychiatry, community and the memory of place, through the prism of the shelter. By bringing together a diversity of voices about this place and the community that once inhabited it, some of which have remained unheard, the documentary unfolds as a counter-history of this controversial anti-psychiatric experiment.

What constitutes shelter and what, conversely, can destroy it? How can we find refuge - physically and psychologically - in our relationships with others, and what stands in the way of relational spaces where the health and integrity of each individual is nurtured? How does the built environment influence individual well-being and empowerment? These questions provide the backdrop for listening to the stories and silences of l'Abri and the people who have sought refuge there.
